Reiki

If you ask different Reiki practitioners what Reiki is, you will likely receive varying answers. What you will hear most refers to "hands on healing", which evokes numerous interpretations for everyone. Reiki originated in Japan, and as it progressed through Western cultures, this is the aspect that has been most prominently reported.

In its original form, Reiki was offered as a process of personal development.

What does Reiki do?

As an holistic approach, the balance it brings to the recipients own energy system, encourages it to flow through the body easily. In this balanced and calm space, the body, mind, and emotions can stop and recalibrate. Consequently, we can feel inspired to consider all areas of our life and what supports it from a more relaxed viewpoint. It can therefore allow us to better manage different stresses. Such stress may be emotional, mental, physical, or environmental. Sometimes it can even be from too much of a good thing or not enough.

We may also start to become more aware of our intuitive self and the subtle ways the body can direct us to achieve optimum health and well-being. The effects can be perceived as miraculous at times, as we can be astounded by the way things unfold from the decisions we begin to make from this new perspective.

So, Reiki is not something that can be given; rather, the practitioner acts as a channel through which universal energy flows to the recipient. The body naturally seeks homeostasis and has an innate ability to self-regulate. It intuitively draws in only the energy it needs to restore balance, supporting a state of harmony and overall well-being. Reiki doesn’t propose that life will flow easily or even comfortably, just in the best way possible at that moment in time, eventually leading to improved well-being.

The literal translation of the word Reiki is "Universal Energy". It is based on the understanding that everything is made up of energy and that we all have a life-force energy system, which flows through and around our bodies. By channeling the universal energy, those attuned to Reiki are guided towards a place of balance and harmony on all levels (Mind, Body, Emotion, and Spirit). This balanced space allows for anything that is being held that is not beneficial, to surface and be released when it is ready. In this way, those attuned to Reiki work inwardly first. This, I think, is lovely, as we have all heard the adage, "you cannot help others unless you are well enough in yourself first."

As a byproduct, what emerged was the ability for those attuned to Reiki, to channel this energy to others. This gives them the ability to facilitate a balanced space for the recipient, which allows them to shift and release anything that is required at that time for them.

To aid in this process, there are the 5 precepts. Focusing on them focuses the mind and body and encourages living in a way that brings an awareness of our own energies and the energies of the universe. This part of the Reiki system aims for happiness or contentment through inner peace. Through my experience working with animals, I often see how much the mind can get in the way for us humans when we try to resolve or let go of issues. It therefore aligns with the “as within, so without” philosophical approach to life. What we think and feel influences what we experience in our internal and external reality.

The 5 Precepts

Just for today, do not worry.

Just for today, do not anger.

Just for today, be honest in your work.

Just for today, be grateful.

Just for today, be compassionate with yourself and others.

What happens in a session?

A session is carried out either with the recipient lying on a couch or sitting in comfortable chair in a calm setting. The practitioner places their hands either on or over the body. Calming music may be played if desired. It does not require the removal of clothing and no pressure or physical manipulation is applied. It is therefore adaptable to any setting that has minimal distractions.

Appointments are currently held at The Practice Rooms in Salisbury. They can also be provided in a workplace or as a taster session during a wellbeing event.

Will I feel anything during the session?

Reiki is deeply relaxing and calming. It may take a few sessions to recognise how the energy feels to you.

During a session you may experience a floaty or light feeling, warmth, tingling or coolness.

Sometimes you may not experience anything other than tranquillity.

What about after the session?

As with all practices that work with energies, the effects of a session may not be felt straight away. However, the balance it provides will continue to work for a few days following your session.

Some may experience a release of emotion, so you may have moments of contemplation in the following days. This is common.

It can also be dehydrating and it is advisable to be responsive to your body’s needs, to rest when you need to and to drink plenty of water.

Please note: Reiki is not an alternative to conventional medicine. You should therefore always consult your GP about acute or infectious conditions, and in connection with problems of an urgent nature.

Reiki in the Workplace

In our busy lifestyles, it is difficult to find the time to keep fit or maintain wellbeing practices that we know that could be of benefit.

As an employer you know that a happy, contented, healthy team can increase your company’s productivity. So have you ever considered making complementary therapies available to your staff on-site?

Reiki requires very little equipment, just a quiet room. It can be easily fitted in to a lunch hour or after work too.

If you are interested in providing Reiki to your staff on-site, please use the contact form to make an enquiry.
