What is Reiki?
If you ask different Reiki practitioners what Reiki is, you will likely receive varying answers. What you will hear most refers to "hands on healing", which evokes numerous interpretations for everyone. Reiki originated in Japan, and as it progressed through Western cultures, this is the aspect that has been most prominently reported.
In its original form, Reiki was offered as a process of personal development.
Where does Reiki come from?
Pronounced Ray-Key, it literally means “Universal Energy”. It is technique that originated in Japan and has been passed down from teacher to student since Dr Mikao Usui discovered it in the late 19th Century. Every Reiki practitioner has a lineage that can be traced back to Dr Mikao Usui. You can think of this like a family tree.
Reiki is not founded on religion and there are many different styles of Reiki, because it has evolved as it has grown. As with all therapies, it is best to find a practice and a practitioner that suits you. Click here to learn more about my approach to Reiki.
What is Reiki?

What does Reiki do?
So, Reiki is not something that can be given; rather, the practitioner acts as a channel through which universal energy flows to the recipient. The body naturally seeks homeostasis and has an innate ability to self-regulate. It intuitively draws in only the energy it needs to restore balance, supporting a state of harmony and overall well-being. Reiki doesn’t propose that life will flow easily or even comfortably, just in the best way possible at that moment in time, eventually leading to improved well-being. It can therefore allow us to better manage different stresses. Such stress may be emotional, mental, physical, or environmental. Sometimes it can even be from too much of a good thing or not enough.
Reiki is based on the understanding that everything is made up of energy and that we all have a life-force energy system, which flows through and around our bodies - hence "Universal Energy". By channeling the universal energy, those attuned to Reiki are guided towards a place of balance and harmony on all levels (Mind, Body, Emotion, and Spirit). This balanced space allows for anything that is being held that is not beneficial, to surface and be released when it is ready. In this way, those attuned to Reiki work inwardly first. This, I think, is lovely, as we have all heard the adage, "you cannot help others unless you are well enough in yourself first."
As a byproduct, what emerged was the ability for those attuned to Reiki, to channel this energy to others. This gives them the ability to facilitate a balanced space for the recipient, which allows them to shift and release anything that is required at that time for them.
To aid in this process, there are the 5 precepts. Focusing on them focuses the mind and body and encourages living in a way that brings an awareness of our own energies and the energies of the universe. This part of the Reiki system aims for happiness or contentment through inner peace. Through my experience working with animals, I often see how much the mind can get in the way for us humans when we try to resolve or let go of issues. It therefore aligns with the “as within, so without” philosophical approach to life. What we think and feel influences what we experience in our internal and external reality.
The 5 Precepts
Just for today, do not worry.
Just for today, do not anger.
Just for today, be honest in your work.
Just for today, be grateful.
Just for today, be compassionate with yourself and others.
Can Reiki work with my religion?
You will find there are mixed opinions on this, which is why I believe it to be a matter of personal preference. Reiki is requested for the highest good of all and is therefore only applied and used in the best interests of the recipient. Even though Reiki is not based on religion or personal belief, it can be incorporated in to a session if requested by an individual. For example, some like for Reiki to be requested from God rather than the universal source. My suggestion to those who are unsure whether Reiki fits in with their religion, is to ask God if Reiki is appropriate for them. The response may be yes, no, or not right now
